‘Fluorescent’ refers to a pigment that absorbs and reflects more light than conventional colours, resulting in brighter and more powerful shades.

As you may already know, the spectrum of colours goes from invisible infrared rays to high-energy ultraviolet rays. Unlike some animals, the colours that humans can actually see are the ones in the middle of the colour spectrum range, as in a rainbow.

All colours absorb daylight and re-emits a portion of the visible spectrum that matches its principal wavelength, and this is what you can see in your eyes. The ‘recipe’ of fluorescent colours include a larger amount of both the visible spectrum and the lower wavelengths compared to regular colours.

They create the appearance of vivid strong colour by absorbing and converting light energy and wavelengths of ultraviolet rays and colours lower in the visible spectrum. As a result, your eye sees a far more intense colour than regular, flat colour.

We provide the option of adding black to your printing allowing you to add depth and contrast to your design. A pop of black can serve to add detail, or be incorporated more fully in to the design, such as reversing black out of neon or vice versa. Have a few experiments with your design to see which combination of colours and coverage works best for you.

There are a limited number of Day glo colours – We print yellow, orange, pink and green.

Fluorescent colours for stickers and signs

Screenprint & Display can print day glo reflective stickers and signs. The day glo colours (orange, pink, green etc.) would be printed on to the white reflective material, all areas that are not covered by ink would reflect, any area with ink on would not.

Yes—When produced on outdoor-suitable materials (e.g. Correx or Foamex) with durable inks, your sign is weather-resistant to typical UK rain and wind. For longer outdoor runs, add a protective laminate and specify robust fixings (eyelets/cable ties).

Note: while the sign itself is weatherproof, fluorescent colours naturally fade faster than standard inks under strong sunlight.

  • Correx (fluted): Lightweight, cost-effective, great for short-term outdoor campaigns like elections, events and site signage. Slight ribbing in the flute; best when budget and quantity matter.

  • Foamex (rigid PVC sheet): Smoother print surface and more rigid feel for premium look and medium-term use, indoors or out. Ideal for retail displays, wall-mounted signs and repeat use.

No. Fluorescent signs are not reflective. Day-Glo colours look brightest in daylight but do not shine back car headlights at night. If you need night-time or 24/7 visibility, speak t our team about retro-reflective materials (e.g. engineering-grade/RA1 or high-intensity/RA2 reflective) or combine Day-Glo with reflective for external illumination for after-dark use.

No—Day-Glo (fluorescent) signs are designed for maximum daytime visibility by converting UV light into ultra-bright colour. Glow-in-the-dark (photoluminescent) signs store light and emit a glow in darkness without power. Fluorescent isn’t reflective and won’t glow at night unless lit; photoluminescent isn’t as vivid in daylight but is visible after lights go out.

Yes—We print photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) signs in custom sizes and shapes. Choose rigid boards (e.g. Foamex/ACM) or luminescent vinyl for flat surfaces. We can add protective laminate, drill holes/eyelets, and supply to common safety grades for wayfinding.

Not exactly. Day-Glo is a brand name often used to mean fluorescent inks/films—super-bright colours that pop in daylight by converting UV light.

Neon properly refers to illuminated glass tubes (or LED “neon-effect” signs) that glow because they’re powered. People sometimes say “neon colours” to mean bright fluorescent shades, but they’re different: fluorescent = daylight punch, neon signs = powered illumination.

Please contact us for a free sample, printed on waterproof, 100% recyclable Correx® plastic.

We offer great trade rates for larger orders of fluorescent day glo printed signs. Talk to our team about trade prices.

Outdoor advertising boards with fluorescent print were seen 75% sooner than boards printed in conventional colours, (according to research by the Day Glo Colour Corporation).

Hi-vis fluorescent signs are even more noticeable in low light conditions. They are bold, memorable and very distinct.

Day glo signs are generally printed on to 4mm white Correx®, although we can produce them on Foamex or Dibond if required.

It is the ink that is day glo, this is screen printed directly on to the surface of the material.

There are various day glo ink colours available including; orange, pink, green and yellow.

Custom-Printed Signage: Fluorescent vs Reflective vs Glow-in-the-Dark

Use this guide to pick the right print for visibility, durability and budget. UK specs, buyer-friendly notes.

Comparison of Fluorescent (Day-Glo), Reflective and Glow-in-the-Dark custom-printed signage
Feature Fluorescent (Day-Glo) Reflective (Retro-reflective) Glow-in-the-Dark (Photoluminescent)
How it works Fluorescent pigments absorb UV and re-emit ultra-bright colour for extreme daytime visibility. Microprisms/beads return light back to source (e.g., headlights), making graphics pop at night. Pigment charges in light and emits a greenish glow in darkness without power.
Best visibility Daytime & low-UV shade; not effective at night unless lit. Night/low-light with a light source (headlights/torches); decent in day. Dark/blackouts after charging; moderate in normal light.
External light needed? No (for day). Night use needs external illumination. Yes—requires incident light (e.g. vehicle headlights). No once charged; brighter if pre-exposed to strong light.
Typical uses Retail promos, elections, events, wayfinding, temporary roadworks notices, race signage. Traffic/road signs, safety markings, wayfinding where night legibility matters. Fire escape plans, , stair treads, indoor hazard labels, backup visibility.
Substrates Correx (4–6 mm), Foamex (3–5 mm), ACM for longer-term. ACM/aluminium with reflective films; Correx for temporary. Foamex/ACM or rigid PVC; photoluminescent vinyl panels.
Outdoor durability Short–medium term; colours gradually mute with UV. Medium–long term; built for outdoor/night performance. Medium outdoors (best indoors); glow intensity tapers with age.
Colour options Yellow, orange, pink and green White or yellow; coloured reflective available (ink coverage can reduce reflectivity).  (White is more grey looking) Typically luminous yellow-green; limited palette.
Night performance  Not reflective; requires lighting. Excellent—designed for headlights/torches. Glows after charging; visibility reduces over time in darkness.
Cost level (typ.) £ (budget-friendly for short runs/temporary). ££–£££ (material drives cost). ££ (specialist media; usually smaller format).
When to choose Maximum daytime punch for short-run campaigns. Night-time readability (traffic, wayfinding, safety). Passive after-dark visibility without power (egress/safety).
