Frequently Asked Questions

Ask the experts: These questions have been answered by Tony S, our Production Manager.

How are window stickers made?

The vast majority of stickers are designed to stick to the inside of places, such as car window stickers or shop graphics. The stickers appear to be sticky on the same side as the print, but this isn’t the case. Window stickers start life as a sheet of plain transparent self adhesive (or sticky backed) vinyl. The artwork is printed the wrong way round…or mirror imaged, onto the surface of the clear vinyl. Next a white layer of ink is printed either the whole surface, or in a shape, depending on the artwork design. When the sticker is peeled off it’s backing paper, the printed artwork is revealed, and the sticker is ready to apply. When you look at the artwork, you are actually seeing it through a layer of clear adhesive glue, as well as the thin layer of clear vinyl. Remember…the artwork is printed on the other side of the sheet!

How do I supply artwork for vinyl sticker printing?

There’s nothing special about the preparation of artwork for window sticker printing. It can either be supplied to the printer as a normal-reading piece of artwork, or you can flip it, to make is read backwards. As long as your printer knows that you are wanting reverse printed window stickers, they will know what to do with it.

Do double sided stickers have to have the same image on each side?

Double sided window graphics are printed using a mixture of both ‘right-reading’ and ‘wrong-reading’ (or mirror image) artwork, for either side of the sticker. There are a couple of ways of producing double sided work, but most important of all is that they are opaque, otherwise you can get a clash of both sides of the sticker showing through from both sides when it is placed in a window, with light shining on it. Because all stickers are printed to your own design and artwork, you can have both sides printed the same, or both sides printed differently. Speak to an experienced printer who can show you various printed samples of their work, and all will be well.

Can the backing paper of a sticker be printed?

It certainly can…and this piece of throwaway paper can be used as a valuable place for further branding, advertising, discount coupon, or just information. Because it’s an extra, there is an additional cost to printing sticker backing paper, but we’ve seen this done on many millions of stickers, as it’s such a great potential advertising opportunity. Also, your design doesn’t need to be simple…the backing can be as colourful and well designed as you’d like.

Can stickers for use on glass be printed on a transparent vinyl backing?

Yes you can have a transparent sticker with a full colour print.

The backing of stickers can either be printed to create square or rectangular stickers, or the artwork can be shaped, so that it appears in the window as a shaped image, rather than with straight edges. If you want to create a shaped image, perhaps a circle, or any other shape, it is less expensive to print the artwork as a shaped printed image with a square clear backing, rather than cutting out the shape, as this would add another process.

Could the vinyl window stickers be cut to shape?

Window vinyl stickers and graphics can be made in all shapes and sizes: there really aren’t any limitations. Window stickers can easily be profile cut to a shape using a cad cutting system, or traditional die cutting, for larger quantities. Whether the stickers are printed on sticky vinyl, self cling, or any other material, cutting them to shape improves their appearance, but does add to the cost of production.

Can extra large window graphics be printed?

Window graphics can be printed up to a maximum of 1600mm in width. If you are wanting to fill a really large window, it may require the artwork to be printed in ‘drops’ or panels, that are fitted like wallpaper and join together to fill the window.

How to apply stickers without bubbles?

Stickers on windows are easy to apply…if you know what to do. As with everything, there are several ‘tricks of the trade’ that allow window stickers to be fitted without bubbles, creases or other blemishes. Firstly the window must be spotlessly clean. Make sure you remove any hairs, dust or marks. Although it may seem strange, a little moisture is now needed. If you try and stick any sticker down onto a dry surface, it will seal in any air bubbles which will look unsightly.

Ideally you should make a mixture of tepid water with a few drops of washing up liquid in it. Wipe this over area of glass with a damp cloth, leaving some of the water on the glass. Peel the sticker from its backing paper and gently lay it on to the wet glass, but do not rub it on yet. Next, using the edge of a credit card or similar, work from the centre of the sticker outwards and gently squeegee the moisture out of the edges of the sticker. Once this has been done, give the back of the sticker and surrounding glass a gentle wipe to mop up any water. Now leave the sticker to dry on to the glass, and you will have a bubble-free, fully stuck down sticker to admire!

Are self cling stickers the same cost as sticky ones?

Window graphics that are printed on self cling material may be more expensive than self adhesive ones, but it depends on how many are needed, and what size. Clear self cling material does cost more than self adhesive vinyl, but this is only part of the cost of the overall print cost. A job printed on self cling would become progressively more expensive, the larger the order…as there is more material required. However, if you only need a couple of hundred small size window stickers, there wouldn’t be a great deal of difference in the overall cost.

I don’t want my window graphics to fade. How long will they last?

This very much depends on how much direct exposure the stickers will have to bright, direct sunlight. As a rule, stickers that are screenprinted will last far longer than those printed in any other way, as the ink is specially made to be lightfast. As well as this, the screenprinting process puts down a much thicker layer of ink, which gives improved UV stability.

  • "We have been supplied quality Vinyl stickers by Screen Print and Display for at least 6 years. Our business started back in the early ‘00’s, and quite a number of other suppliers had been used until we tried Screen Print & Display. Since then we have not need to go anywhere else. Our stickers need to be tough, with a double lamination, and very adhesive, for submerge water use. We can highly recommend Screen Print & Display for quality products, customer service, and cost."

Case Study - White printed window graphics to promote Iconic Michelin soles on footwear range

When a European retail distributor needed to successfully print the iconic image of the Michelin man, in white ink onto transparent window vinyls, they knew to contact Screenprint and Display Ltd.

The window graphics advertise the range of stylish yet practical Etnies skateboarding footwear, produced using the Michelin Marana soles, and would be displayed in retail outlet windows throughout Europe.

As Screenprint and Display Ltd offer a variety of modern and traditional printing methods, they could match the requirements of the distributor and print white ink on to transparent vinyl.

It is important when printing transparent window vinyls to ensure that the colours are opaque, otherwise the image can appear translucent and become difficult to view from the outside of the store. To ensure a strong image all the areas of print must be underpinned in white ink.
