Do You Have to Display Signs if You Have CCTV?

21/09/2023

CCTV Signage should be displayed clearly if you have cctv or surveillance cameras in operation.

The cameras are collecting personal data, images and therefore you need to comply with the data protection act and GDPR, “you must register your details with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and pay a data protection fee, unless you are exempt.” (https://www.gov.uk/data-protection-your-business/using-cctv)

For further guidance please visit: https://www.gov.uk/data-protection-your-business/using-cctv

It is important that people are told and made aware that CCTV is in operation and they may be recorded, the easiest way to do this is to display signage to highlight this. These signs must be clearly visible and easily readable. Therefore, it is important that the signs are the appropriate size for the location.

Along with alerting people to the fact that surveillance monitoring is in operation, the signage should provide clear contact details of the operating company and it must advise what purpose of the cameras / surveillance is i.e. crime prevention.
